Breaking ground in October of 2018, Winthrop Center is the largest investment for a single project in Boston. The 1.3 million square feet, 53 story, 500 unit luxury condo building – which will also offer office space – is expected to be ready for occupancy in 2022. Winthrop Center will be Platinum LEED Certified upon completion which will reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions by as much as 80% compared to a standard building of its size.
During its initial planning phases, developers had planned a “Great Hall” to be lined with retail storefronts and restaurants. Since breaking ground the “Great Hall” has been revamped to connect Devonshire and Federal streets and has been dubbed “The Connector”. According to developers, “The Connector” is modeled after Boston’s numerous college campuses that are laid out to encourage spontaneous interactions with the people you see on a regular basis but don’t necessarily know. “The Connector” features large TV screens, removable furniture, and will act as a lobby most of the time but will be available for events.
